Extended Essay

The Extended Essay is an extra assessment that the IB requires for the diploma. The base of this essay is to select a subject and from it develop a research question of the subject and answer it with a four thousand word essay. The subject were I based my essay was biology, and because of the requirements, I had to do an elaborated experiment and write the essay in form of a lab report. My experience through writing the essay was pretty interesting, given that I really liked my subject but I had a lot of different pressures while performing the experiment. Because of the pandemic I had to perform my experiment at home while doing some parts at school. This come and go challenged me to manage my lab experiment on my own, which later own help me learn much more. Extended Essay

The subject I chose to base my Extended Essay on, was biology, given my enjoyment to this subject and the future I'm looking to in the matter. As mentioned, biology requires you to write a lab report as the actual essay, therefore an experiment had to be performed. To plan the experiment, a brainstorm happened with several possible ideas. I wanted something related to health and macromolecules but didn't wanted to work with plants neither humans, given the complications. Therefore, I managed to make a proper experiment with bacteria. Before the experiment I really didn't have much interest in bacteria, but by designing the experiment, curiosity arose. To implement the macromolecule part I wanted in my experiment and bacteria, as well as health, a thoughtful experiment was designed. My topic was finding out which macromolecule based diet, could best grow bacteria in microbiota. The elaboration of the experiment was exhausting, given that I had to do it at home. However, results show that the experiment was successful, which is why I'm really proud of. Given all this process of experimentation, the IB skill I used was risk takers.
